Fight Between City And Taxi Drivers Heads To Court
First there was the two day strike; now the fight between taxi drivers and the city shifts into court.
Taxi drivers and supporters rallied outside Manhattan Federal court today, as a hearing inside was set to address a petition filed by The New York Taxi Workers Alliance and eight individual drivers.
The petition alleges the Taxi and Limousine Commission is violating drivers' constitutional rights by mandating all cabs be outfitted with GPS systems, credit card scanners, and video screens.
The Alliance claims the systems are costly and unnecessary, and an invasion of privacy.
But the city says the technology was part of a deal the drivers made in exchange for fare increases.
