Taxi union leader says another cab strike is possible
Another cab strike is a "very strong possibility," the head of the taxi union said yesterday, and drivers will decide their next move tonight.
"There is a very strong possibility that the next step will be a work stoppage," said Bhairavi Desai, head of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance.
A federal judge refused Friday to block the city from requiring cabs to be equipped with Global Positioning Systems and credit card machines, but he also said a lawsuit against the policy could proceed. The union mainly cites privacy concerns in opposing the tracking technology, but also maintains that the credit card system being imposed on them is gravely flawed.
"We've seen cases where a passenger swipes the card and jumps out," said Desai. "A few minutes later, the driver gets a message that the card was declined."
