Cabby Is Expected to Avoid Charges
Charges will probably be dismissed against a New York livery-cab driver who claimed that an unknown man left a 6-month-old girl in his cab and disappeared, prosecutors say.
The driver, Klever Sailema, 44, was at first hailed as a hero after he took the baby, Daniella, to a Queens firehouse in February. The police later said that Mr. Sailema had conspired with the baby’s aunt to get rid of her.
Mr. Sailema was charged with falsely reporting an incident and criminal facilitation. His companion, Maria Siavichay, 21, who is the baby’s aunt, was charged with criminal facilitation.
Prosecutors say Mr. Sailema and Ms. Siavichay had the baby’s best interest at heart but proceeded in the wrong way. They also say that if the two stay out of trouble in the next six months, the charges will probably be dropped at a court hearing in October.
The baby’s mother is a teenager from the Baltimore area, and she and the child are being cared for by social services officials, according to the authorities.
