Taxi cab driver robbed at gunpoint

VINELAND — Police are investigating a possible armed robbery where a city taxi cab driver said an unknown male entered his cab, pointed an object at his temple and demanded money.

The victim, a 50-year-old East Chestnut Avenue resident, told officers he never saw what the subject pressed against his right temple, but though it was a handgun.

The robber reportedly made off with $300 and the cab driver's cell phone.

Police described the subject as male, 6 feet tall, with a heavy build. He wore blue jeans and a large black coat with a hood that covered his face. According to police, the victim was unable to give and a description of the man's facial features.

He was last seen running west on Broadway.

Police early morning Saturday responded to the corner of Broadway and Pine Street, where the victim related he had received a call assignment from a "private" number and drove out to 610 Broadway to pick up his passenger.

The driver found the unknown man standing near the intersection of Broadway and Pine Street and let him in at around 12:15 a.m.

The subject reportedly sat in the rear passenger-side seat and immediately placed an unknown object against the victim's temple.

According to police, the safety glass put in place to separate the driver from the passenger was ajar at the time of the robbery.

The man demanded all of the driver's money and his cell phone. The victim initially only gave up $100 in addition to his phone. However, after making further demands, the robber was able to force and additional $200 from the driver.

The subject then fled on foot west on Broadway, according to police. Patrol units combed the area for suspects, but to no avail. In addition, the victim's cell phone service provider was unable to locate his phone via their in-house Global Positioning System.

Police K-9 units led police from the scene to the Oak Tavern, at the corner of Oak Road and North West Boulevard. However, the man working the cash register all night there said he had not seen anyone matching the subject's description.

The resident living at 610 Broadway later told officers he had not seen or heard anything during the night. He added he had no idea why someone would ask to be picked up at his house.

A bicycle found in the area of Oxford and Pine streets and collected as possible evidence.

The victim declined to report to police headquarters for a taped statement and to view photo line-up, stating he just wanted to go home.
