Some cabbies in suburban NY want increased protection
YONKERS, N.Y. - Some taxi drivers in suburban New York are calling for a law that would require measures to protect them after one of their own was robbed and fatally stabbed.
About 160 taxis drove from downtown Yonkers to an industrial neighborhood on Monday where Geraldo (He-RAL'-do) Gutierrez crashed his cab after being attacked.
The cabbies heard a call for unity and a for a law that would put either a partition separating passenger and driver or a camera in taxis.
State Federation of Taxi Drivers President Fernando Mateo said the entire state should have the same kind of measures that New York City has in place to protect its cabbies.
A 16-year-old boy has been charged with stabbing Gutierrez to death.
