Credit Cards Cause Taxi Trouble
PHILADELPHIA — Some Philadelphia taxi drivers are on strike after butting heads with the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
Monday night, the NBC 10 investigators showed how some cabbies refuse to accept credit cards from passengers. (Click here for that story.)
Tuesday, the Parking Authority cracked down at the Philadelphia Airport.
The Parking Authority told cabbies as of Tuesday, it's an executive order, the law, that taxis must accept credit cards.
Some cabbies said it's not fair and it turned into one wild scene when one cabbie refused.
"I fight for truth. Lock me up," he wailed, holding up his hands to be cuffed.
The Parking Authority said the cabbie refused to accept a credit card payment, ran from authorities and then incited other cabbies to strike at the airport. Some of the cabbies said they're treated like slave labor with no rights.
Cabbies complained they must pay an extra 5 percent of their own money to process every credit card fare and that it can take weeks to get reimbursed what their owed.
"We're the working-class poor. We are working 14 to 15 hours a day, and coming home with $40, $50 in our pocket. We have no health insurance or anything like that. Now, they want to take 5 percent from credit card transactions," said Ron Blount with the Taxi Workers Alliance.
"Everything they are saying comes from their lack of knowledge, lack of knowledge of the system," said William Schmid with the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
As one cabbie fought to stop his taxi from being towed Tuesday at the airport, a strike began and customers were left waiting.
Eventually some cab drivers agreed to pick up passengers and one cabbie was hauled off for disorderly conduct.
All 1,600 cabs in the city have had credit card machines in their taxis since January. Some taxis are threatening an action at 30th Street Station Wednesday.
The Parking Authority said it will be there, too, and any cabbie who won't accept credit cards will be cited and fined.
