Taxi Commissioner Says Livery Cabs Work Fine for Outer Boroughs
NEW YORK, NY March 26, 2007 —Are more yellow cabs coming to the outer boroughs? The City Council is considering a bill that would do just that, by setting up ten taxi stands near transit hubs.
REPORTER: Queens councilman John Liu, chairman of the transportation committee, says there's a great demand for yellow cabs in Brooklyn, Staten Island, the Bronx, and Queens. But Taxi Commissioner Matthew Daus says livery cabs work just fine.
DAUS: To say that the system is not working, that New Yorkers don't have some type of ground transportation is just wrong. I think what we're talking about is people would like other options which is a totally different debate.
REPORTER: Daus says it'd be too expensive to operate and staff the ten cab stands. But Councilman Liu says the TLC should have plenty of money from recent sales of cab medallions.
