Police: Yonkers man showed gun to cabby - as cops watched
YONKERS - A city man showing a loaded handgun to a cabdriver had another audience - two plainclothes police officers, police said.
Members of the Yonkers Anti-Crime Unit arrested 24-year-old Khaaliq Harris of 233 Elm St. and confiscated the .380-caliber gun, loaded with eight rounds, Yonkers police Capt. Edward Geiss said.
Geiss gave this account:
Anti-Crime Unit Officers Robert Devitt and Robert Hanney spotted the cab on North Broadway at 11:19 p.m. Thursday with the dome light on. Harris, seated in the back seat, was showing a weapon to the driver.
The officers followed the cab and called for a marked police cruiser to stop it.
When Police Officers William Cave and Anthony Campanile stopped the cab on Woodland Avenue, Harris jumped out with a black bag containing the gun.
He dropped the bag and tried to run, but the officers captured him and recovered the gun.
Harris is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, police said.
Police impounded the driver's car because he did not have a valid hack license to drive a taxi, but did not arrest the 25-year-old.
