With a little help from an enterprising cab driver, Irondequoit Police early today nabbed a man charged with stealing a lottery machine from an Empire Boulevard convenience store.

Irondequoit Police Sgt. Susan Erbland said that around 4 a.m., Barry W. Stader, 44, of Canandaigua entered the 7-11 store at 430 Empire Blvd.,“grabbed lottery register and ran out of store with it.” She said Stader scuffled briefly with the store clerk outside the building, striking him in the head, then fled in a car.

A nearby cab driver followed Stader, and kept police apprised of his whereabouts.
Irondequoit Police caught up to Strader on Route 490 near Monroe Avenue, said Erbland.

Strader was arrested and charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree grand larceny and second-degree assault.

The store clerk suffered minor injuries and was not hospitalized.
