A runaway cab jumped the curb and drove into a rush-hour crowd in the Flatiron District yesterday, seriously injuring an elderly woman, witnesses said.

"When I saw her, her eyes were closed, and there was blood everywhere," said Shawna Lund, who was working in a store across the street when the yellow taxi crashed at 5:10 p.m. at 18th Street and Broadway.

Co-worker Alicia Minninger, 22, said that after mowing down the woman, the cab "then hit another car in front of [it], then another woman on a bike, then crashed into . . . scaffolding on a building."

Lund said the woman riding the bicycle "just picked up her bike, put back her stuff inside her basket and stood there, watching."

Driver Sherba Ngawng, 49, said afterward, "The brakes wouldn't stop, and the car just moved to the sidewalk."
