Taxi cab rates at issue with city tonight

Taking a taxi ride in Manhattan is about to get more expensive, with the City Commission scheduled to approve a 20-cent per mile rate increase for the city's three cab companies. The consent agenda item is part of the commission's Tuesday meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall.

"Phenomial" gas prices is the primary reason ABC Union Cab Company, Yell-Bell Taxi, Inc., and Taxi-for-less, say they want to increase their per mile fare from $1.40 to $1.60. Fuel expenses over the past year have climbed from 17 percent to 27 percent of their gross revenues, according to the companies.

The commission approved a rate increase for the taxi companies in May 2005, also because of high gas prices — from $1.25 per mile to $1.40.

Also Tuesday, the commission plans to finalize an economic assistance package for Collegiate Marketing Services (CMS), which plans to relocate from Overland Park to the former Woolworth's building at 116 S. Fourth Street. The incentive agreement includes a $350,000 forgivable loan and a $350,000 conventional loan.

The commission is to consider five items recommended for approval by the planning board, including an ordinance annexing a 121-acre tract of land for the proposed Lee Mill Heights Addition, Unit Four; and first reading of an ordinance to rezone Lee Mill Heights Addition, Unit Four, from county general agricultural district to single-family residential district.
Also:

First reading of an ordinance annexing a 31-acre tract of land for the proposed Lee Mill Village planned unit development; and approve first reading of an ordinance to rezong the proposed Lee Mill Village PUD from general agricultural District to residential PUD.

First reading of an ordinance to rezone the Barton Place PUD, south of Wildcat Creek Golf & Fitness, approximately 950 feet west of Amherst Avenue.

First reading of ordinances annexing and rezoning the proposed Hawthorne Woods Addition, north of the intersection of Gary Avenue and Churchhill Street, east of Grand Mere Vanesta Addition, Unit 3, and west of the Kansas Farm Bureau, from county general agricultural district to single-family residential district.

First reading of an ordinance rezoning 1125 Waters Street, southwest of the intersection of Shaffer Street and Waters Street, from highway service commercial district, to single-family residential district.
