Bring On the Meters

As a resident of both Washington and New York City, I want to support the call for metered cabs in the District [editorial, July 15]. The zone system leads to uncertainty and confusion on the part of passengers, and it encourages dishonesty and confrontation on the part of some drivers.

In Washington, some of us joke about the varying amounts we will be asked to pay for a ride we take regularly. Just last week, I took a taxi from a hotel to my apartment — a one-zone fare during non-rush hours — and was told the fare was $12. When I objected, the driver became argumentative and abusive. Since I'm a New Yorker and know how to handle these situations, he eventually conceded that the fare was $7.50, and I gave that to him. He then tried to "demand" a tip. I don't think so.
Metered cabs — yes!
